What is the Church - Part 4

There are about four ways that the word "church" gets used by most people.  Each meaning adds to our understanding.   Last week, we looked at the building.  This week, our focus returns to people, in a new context.

The word Church can also refer to the church universal - all believers - who call on the name of Jesus as their savior.  Some, who grew up reciting the Apostles Creed, may have been confused when they found themselves referring to the "holy catholic church."  In this sense, catholic. in the lower case, is a word which refers to worldwide, in all times and places.

We, who follow Jesus, join a group that has crossed the boundaries of centuries, and millennia.  We have something in common with those who worship on the other side of the world, the other side of the political aisle, and the other side

Jesus Christ holds us together.  For in him, and by him, were all things made.  Jesus is the head of the church. - Col 1:17
